Heroic Response Credited With Preventing More Deaths
A civilian who had spent years training with firearms after witnessing a previous mass shooting is being recognized for helping stop a deadly attack at an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho.
The shooting unfolded on August 1 when a gunman opened fire at the busy restaurant, killing three people and injuring seven others. Authorities said the suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being confronted by an armed civilian and an off-duty police officer.
Officials believe their quick actions prevented the gunman from causing even greater loss of life.
Civilian Acted on Training During the Attack
The civilian, identified as 35-year-old healthcare worker Jordan Salinas, said his response came almost automatically because of years of firearms training. He began preparing for such an emergency after witnessing the 2021 Boise mall shooting, an experience that had a lasting impact on him.
When he heard gunfire outside the restaurant, Salinas moved toward the danger rather than away from it. He exchanged gunfire with the attacker, forcing the suspect to retreat. Authorities praised both Salinas and the off-duty officer for their courage during the incident.
According to investigators, the confrontation disrupted the attack and likely saved additional lives.
Victims Remembered as Investigation Continues
Police identified the suspected shooter as 24-year-old Chad Williams. Investigators say he acted alone, and no motive has yet been confirmed.
Among those killed was 23-year-old In-N-Out employee Ashley Garibay. Another victim was identified as 59-year-old Cristopher Claunch. Several people remain hospitalized, with some still in critical condition.
Law enforcement agencies continue reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the suspect’s background to determine what led to the shooting.

The tragedy has shaken the Twin Falls community, with residents gathering to honor the victims and support their families. The incident has also renewed nationwide discussions about mass shootings, emergency preparedness, and the role of armed civilians during active shooter situations.
