Liechtenstein Investigates Major Cyberattack on Beneficial Ownership Register

Liechtenstein is investigating a major cybersecurity incident after hackers gained unauthorized access to its register of beneficial owners, exposing information related to approximately 31,000 companies, foundations, and trusts.

Authorities said the cyberattack took place during the night of July 29–30. The breach was detected shortly afterward, prompting officials to secure the affected system and take it offline while investigators assessed the damage.

According to the government, there is currently no indication that any of the stored information was changed or deleted. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full scope of the incident.

Register Supports Anti-Money Laundering Efforts

The compromised database contains information about the individuals who ultimately control companies, foundations, and trusteeships. Liechtenstein introduced the register in 2021 as part of its efforts to strengthen anti-money laundering (AML) measures and combat the financing of terrorism.

Officials confirmed that the attackers copied data from the register before the system was shut down. However, authorities emphasized that the breach did not appear to affect banking systems or customer banking information.

Government Forms Crisis Team After Security Breach

In response to the incident, the Liechtenstein government established a crisis task force led by senior officials to oversee the investigation and coordinate security measures.

The government is also notifying affected parties while cybersecurity experts continue examining how the attackers gained access. Additional safeguards are expected to be introduced to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and reduce the risk of similar attacks in the future.

Liechtenstein, a small European nation located between Switzerland and Austria, has a financial sector that plays a key role in its economy. The latest cyberattack highlights the growing cybersecurity challenges facing governments responsible for protecting sensitive financial and corporate data.
