Michigan Mall Shooting Sparks Panic Among Shoppers
A deadly shooting at a busy shopping mall in Auburn Hills, Michigan, left a 20-year-old man dead and another person injured, sending shoppers rushing for safety during the weekend.
The incident happened at the food court inside Great Lakes Crossing Outlets on Saturday evening. Emergency responders quickly arrived after multiple reports of gunfire. Authorities confirmed that the male victim died at the scene, while a 19-year-old woman suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
One witness, who was wearing Meta smart glasses, recorded the chaotic moments immediately after the shooting as frightened shoppers ran through the mall searching for exits.
Police Say Earlier Fight Led to Gunfire
According to investigators, the shooting was linked to an earlier confrontation inside a food court restroom.
Police said the suspected shooter, a 22-year-old man legally licensed to carry a concealed handgun, was allegedly involved in an argument with the victim before the two crossed paths again in the food court. Investigators believe the victim and another unidentified man confronted the suspect, leading to a physical fight that ended with multiple gunshots being fired.
The suspect remained at the scene and was taken into custody by responding officers without further incident.
Witness Describes Moments of Fear and Confusion
A witness who had been eating nearby said the sound of gunfire initially caused confusion before people realized the danger and rushed to escape. After taking cover, the witness used Meta smart glasses to capture video showing large crowds quickly evacuating the mall.
Police officers who were already patrolling nearby responded within moments, secured the building, and conducted a full search to ensure there was no ongoing threat.
Authorities stated that the incident appears to have been isolated and confirmed that no additional victims were found during the search.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Following the shooting, Great Lakes Crossing Outlets closed for the remainder of the day while investigators processed the crime scene.
The case will now be reviewed by prosecutors, who will determine what criminal charges, if any, will be filed against the suspect. Detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses as the investigation remains active.
