National Guard Fatally Shoots Suspect in Memphis
A 20-year-old man was shot and killed by Tennessee National Guard members during an early morning foot pursuit in downtown Memphis, following reports of gunfire in the area.
According to officials, the incident happened around 4 a.m. as law enforcement officers and National Guard personnel responded to reports of shots being fired. The man reportedly fled on foot when officers approached, leading to a chase through the downtown area.
Authorities said the encounter escalated when the suspect turned toward the pursuing National Guard members while carrying a firearm. The soldiers opened fire, striking the man. Medical aid was provided immediately, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation Underway
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has taken charge of the case and is examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officials are expected to review witness statements, physical evidence, and available video footage before releasing further details.
The identity of the man has been confirmed as 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson. Family members described him as a student, a young father, and an aspiring music artist. Authorities have not announced any criminal charges related to the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Incident Renews Focus on National Guard Deployment
The shooting has renewed attention on the role of National Guard troops assigned to crime-fighting operations in Memphis. The soldiers involved were part of a federally supported task force working alongside local police to address violent crime in the city.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young called the shooting unfortunate and said officials would wait for the results of the independent investigation before drawing conclusions. The task force has been the subject of ongoing public debate since its deployment, particularly regarding the use of military personnel in civilian law enforcement operations.
