Italian Police Crack Down on Suspected Extremist Network
Italian investigators have detained seven individuals believed to be linked to a militant anarchist group accused of orchestrating attacks on the country’s rail infrastructure during the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
Authorities said five suspects were placed in custody, while two others were ordered under house arrest. Prosecutors have brought charges including terrorism-related offenses and attempts to undermine the democratic system.
High-Speed Rail Attack Caused Major Disruptions
According to investigators, two of the suspects were directly involved in a February 14 sabotage operation targeting the high-speed railway connecting Rome and Florence. Officials said improvised explosive devices were used, causing infrastructure damage estimated at approximately €455,000.
The incident led to delays exceeding one hour for several train services during the Winter Games, which took place from February 6 to February 22.
Authorities Probe Wider Network Across Italy
Police believe the Rome-based group maintained links with like-minded cells operating in Bologna, Milan, and Naples. Additional searches were conducted as part of the investigation into the organization’s activities.
Investigators are also examining possible connections to other acts of sabotage claimed by extremist activists, including a March attack on the Transalpine Pipeline. Officials say the network used online platforms to spread propaganda and claim responsibility for attacks.
Italian authorities have intensified counterterrorism efforts as they seek to dismantle groups accused of targeting critical infrastructure and threatening public safety.
