Suspicious Power Outage May Have Triggered Deadly Kidnapping
California investigators are examining whether a suspicious power outage was used to lure a 60-year-old man outside his home before he was allegedly kidnapped in a case that ended in a fatal police encounter.
According to authorities, the incident happened on the night of July 29 when the victim noticed that the electricity at his residence had suddenly gone out. He reportedly stepped outside to inspect the home’s electrical panel, where investigators believe two suspects confronted him, shot him, and forced him into a vehicle.
Police are continuing to investigate whether the power outage was intentionally caused as part of a planned attack.
Neighbor Heard Gunshots and Calls for Help
Emergency responders were dispatched after reports of gunfire and screams for help from the neighborhood. A nearby resident told investigators that he heard several gunshots followed by someone repeatedly calling for help.
As deputies arrived, they spotted a vehicle leaving the area at high speed and attempted to stop it. The driver refused to pull over, leading officers on a brief pursuit before the vehicle finally stopped.
During the confrontation, one suspect surrendered peacefully. Investigators allege the second suspect ignored police commands, approached the vehicle’s open trunk, and fired into it while the victim was inside. Deputies responded with gunfire, fatally striking the suspect.
Officers then discovered the kidnapped man inside the trunk suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency medical efforts, both the victim and the armed suspect died at the scene.
Police Search Suspects’ Home as Investigation Continues
Detectives later determined that the victim and the deceased suspect had previously known each other through a work-related connection, providing investigators with a possible motive that is still under review.
Authorities executed a search warrant at the suspects’ residence, where they collected evidence believed to be connected to the case.
The surviving suspect has been arrested on charges including murder and kidnapping and remains in custody without bail. Investigators are also working to determine exactly what caused the power outage that preceded the attack and whether it was deliberately planned.
The investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence and reviewing the sequence of events leading to the fatal kidnapping.
