Man Arrested at JD Vance Checkpoint in Miami Faces ICE Hold
A 29-year-old man remains in custody after police say he breached a security checkpoint established for Vice President JD Vance’s visit to Miami Beach on Wednesday. Tobias Gonzalez Garcia was arrested following a confrontation with law enforcement officers on the Venetian Causeway and has been placed under a hold by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. near the San Marco Island Bridge, where Miami Police and U.S. Secret Service agents were manning a secure perimeter. According to the arrest report, Gonzalez Garcia approached the checkpoint on an electric bicycle while roads were closed for the Vice President’s motorcade. Authorities allege that despite loud verbal commands to stop, Gonzalez Garcia made eye contact with an officer and continued moving forward.
Law enforcement officials state that a K-9 unit was conducting a sweep of the area when Gonzalez Garcia allegedly attempted to push through the security line, maneuvering his bicycle into the opposite lane of traffic to bypass the officers. Another officer reportedly stepped into his path and signaled for him to stop, but police say he ignored these commands as well. Gonzalez Garcia subsequently lost control of the electric bicycle and fell, sustaining minor injuries.
Following the fall, the arrest report indicates that Gonzalez Garcia attempted to flee on foot across the San Marco Island Bridge but was quickly apprehended by officers. He was treated by Miami Fire Rescue for scrapes on his knees and knuckles and pain in his forearm before being booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Gonzalez Garcia has been charged with resisting an officer without violence and failure to obey a lawful order. While the charges are misdemeanors, jail records confirm he is being held on an immigration detainer requested by ICE, which typically indicates federal authorities intend to take custody of an individual for potential deportation proceedings upon their release from local custody.
The security breach coincided with significant traffic disruptions across Miami and Miami Beach due to the Vice President’s scheduled appearance at a private event. Local authorities had established numerous checkpoints and road closures to secure the route, a standard protocol for executive visits that frequently draws complaints regarding congestion but is deemed necessary by federal protective services. As of Thursday, Gonzalez Garcia remains detained pending further legal proceedings.
