Father Speaks Out Against Sanctuary Policies After Daughter’s Tragic Death in Illinois
A grieving father is calling for stricter immigration enforcement and an end to sanctuary policies following the death of his 20-year-old daughter, Katie Abraham, in a collision involving an undocumented driver. The case has recently drawn national attention, with the White House highlighting the tragedy as part of a broader critique of local laws that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
Katie Abraham, a resident of Glenview, Illinois, was killed in January 2025 in Urbana. According to police reports, she was a passenger in a vehicle stopped at a red light when it was struck from behind by an SUV traveling at approximately 80 mph. The driver of the SUV, identified as Julio Cucul-Bol, was a Guatemalan national living in the United States without legal status. Authorities stated that Cucul-Bol was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. A second passenger, 21-year-old Chloe Polzin, also died from injuries sustained in the collision.
Joe Abraham, Katie’s father, has since become a vocal critic of Illinois’ strict sanctuary state policies. In recent public statements and media appearances, he expressed frustration with state leadership, specifically Governor J.B. Pritzker, for what he describes as a failure to prioritize the safety of citizens over the protection of undocumented immigrants. Abraham argues that the existing laws allowed the perpetrator, who had allegedly used false identification, to remain in the country despite the legal system’s potential to intervene earlier.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has acknowledged the Abraham family’s loss by naming a recent enforcement initiative “Operation Midway Blitz” in Katie’s honor. The operation focuses on arresting undocumented individuals with criminal records, particularly those charged with driving under the influence. The White House recently amplified this narrative, sharing the details of Katie’s death to underscore the administration’s stance on border security and interior enforcement.
Proponents of sanctuary policies, such as the Illinois Trust Act, maintain that limiting local police cooperation with federal immigration agents is necessary to foster trust within immigrant communities. Advocates argue that these measures ensure that undocumented residents can report crimes and cooperate with law enforcement without fear of deportation, thereby improving overall public safety. However, critics like Joe Abraham contend that these policies create a shield for criminal behavior, preventing the deportation of dangerous individuals before fatal incidents occur.
Cucul-Bol has been charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death and reckless homicide. As the legal proceedings continue, the Abraham family remains steadfast in their campaign to change state laws, asserting that their daughter’s death was a preventable tragedy exacerbated by systemic failures in immigration enforcement.
