Spanish Student Claudia Tacoronte Fatally Stabbed in Mexico
A 21-year-old Spanish exchange student has been fatally stabbed in central Mexico, prompting grief, calls for justice and renewed concerns over the safety of female students. Claudia Tacoronte, who was studying early-childhood education at the University of Granada in Spain, was killed on September 12, 2026, in Cuautla, Morelos.
Tacoronte had traveled to Mexico in mid-August to participate in an academic exchange program at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM). She was visiting Cuautla to attend a festival focused on medicinal plants when the fatal attack occurred.
Mexican authorities are investigating her death under femicide protocols. An attempted robbery is among the possible motives being examined, although investigators have not announced a final conclusion.
CCTV Captures Suspect Fleeing the Scene
Security camera footage reportedly captured a man wearing a white sweatshirt and carrying a black backpack fleeing the area near the Casa de la Cultura, where Tacoronte was found mortally wounded.
According to local reports, residents heard the student calling for help after the attack. Some witnesses reportedly tried to chase the fleeing suspect, but they were unable to catch him.
Questions have also been raised about the emergency response. Residents said repeated calls for assistance initially went unanswered and that police and medical personnel arrived approximately 30 to 40 minutes later. These reported delays are based on witness accounts and have not been independently verified through official emergency records.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the killing, including whether robbery played a role. No final motive or confirmed suspect has been publicly established in the available reports.
Fourth Female Student Linked to UAEM to Die in Seven Months
Tacoronte’s death has drawn additional attention because she is the fourth female student affiliated with UAEM to have been killed or found dead after disappearing since February 2026.
The other reported cases include:
- Kimberly Ramos, 18: An accounting student who disappeared near UAEM’s Chamilpa campus in Cuernavaca on February 20. Her body was found on March 2. A fellow university student was later arrested over alleged involvement in her death.
- Karol Toledo, 18: She disappeared on March 2 in Mazatepec. Her body was found three days later in Coatetelco.
- Michelle Itzayana Fuentes Calderón, 15: A high school student enrolled through a UAEM program who disappeared on May 24. Her body was found on June 2 in Tepoztlán.
The cases have intensified concerns about security for women and students in Morelos. Official data cited in reports recorded 21 femicides in the state between January and July 2026, while 380 were registered across Mexico during the same period.
Spain and Mexico Respond as Students Demand Justice
The Autonomous University of the State of Morelos expressed sorrow and indignation following Tacoronte’s death. University president Viridiana Aydeé León offered condolences to the student’s family.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said officials were in contact with Tacoronte’s family and called for those responsible to be brought to justice. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also said federal authorities were assisting with the investigation.
Students at UAEM held a silent vigil on Monday, calling for justice and stronger protections for female students.
The University of Granada honored Tacoronte with a minute of silence and canceled exchange placements for three students scheduled to study in Morelos during the next semester. The decision highlights the impact of the tragedy on international academic exchange programs and the families of students studying abroad.
Authorities continue investigating the killing, while Tacoronte’s family, fellow students and university communities await further answers.
