Illinois Mother Accused of Killing Son Retains High-Profile Defense Attorney

An Illinois mother facing a murder charge in the death of her 2-year-old son has hired a criminal defense attorney who previously represented Casey Anthony in the high-profile case involving the death of her young daughter.

Corie Walsh, 40, is accused of killing her son, Barrett Walsh, at the family’s home in Frankfort, Illinois, on September 1, 2026. The case has drawn attention after investigators reportedly learned that Walsh had recently taken a strong interest in the Lindsay Clancy trial.

Andrea Lyon, a Chicago-based criminal defense lawyer known for handling serious criminal cases, is now part of Walsh’s legal team. Robert Kerr, Lyon’s law partner, is also representing her.

Investigators Examine Walsh’s Interest in Lindsay Clancy Case

According to court documents, Walsh had recently become interested in the Lindsay Clancy case, which involves a Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children.

Investigators reportedly learned that Walsh had discussed the case in a group chat just hours before her son’s death. The details emerged during witness interviews conducted as part of the investigation.

The circumstances have led to comparisons between the two cases. However, Walsh’s attorney has rejected the suggestion that the incident was a copycat crime.

Lyon has maintained that Walsh was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time of the incident. Her defense is expected to focus on the circumstances surrounding her client’s mental state and the events leading up to the toddler’s death.

What Happened at the Illinois Family Home?

Court documents describe a disturbing series of events at the Walsh family residence.

A neighbor reportedly discovered 2-year-old Barrett dead in the basement before finding Walsh upstairs, where she was cutting herself with a knife. The neighbor intervened, removed the knife, and attempted to help stop the bleeding.

When police arrived, Walsh allegedly told officers that she had killed her son and referred to him as the “devil” and “anti-Christ,” according to the court documents.

Walsh’s 8-month-old baby was also inside the home and was unharmed. Her two older children reportedly returned from school around the time the child was discovered.

Walsh’s husband was away on a business trip when the incident occurred. Prosecutors later said during a court hearing that Walsh had also threatened to kill her husband when he returned.

Defense Attorney Andrea Lyon Responds to the Case

Andrea Lyon previously served as lead counsel for Casey Anthony in 2010, when Anthony faced charges in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony. Lyon later left that defense team, and Jose Baez represented Anthony during the trial. Anthony was acquitted by a Florida jury.

In Walsh’s case, Lyon has emphasized that the family is dealing with a devastating tragedy and that her client’s mental state is central to the defense.

The attorney has denied that Walsh’s actions were connected to a copycat motive involving the Lindsay Clancy case.

Walsh was hospitalized for several days following the incident before being taken into custody. She appeared in court for the first time on September 9, 2026.

If convicted, Walsh faces a potential prison sentence of 60 to 100 years, according to prosecutors.

The investigation and legal proceedings remain ongoing. Allegations described in court documents have not been established as facts at trial, and Walsh is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
