A 56-year-old man has been convicted of raping and murdering his estranged wife before allegedly staging the crime scene to make it appear she had died by suicide. The verdict followed a six-week trial in England, where prosecutors presented evidence that exposed a calculated effort to mislead investigators after the victim’s death.

The victim, 43-year-old Kimberley Thompson, had been separated from her husband for two years while divorce proceedings were ongoing. Although they continued living in the same property, she had reportedly begun rebuilding her life, entered a new relationship, and planned to move out.

Court Hears Details of Planned Cover-Up

According to prosecutors, the attack occurred during the early hours of August 9, 2025. After killing Kimberley, Michael Thompson allegedly arranged the bedroom to resemble a suicide scene, posted messages on her social media accounts, and later contacted emergency services.

Investigators initially received information suggesting Kimberley had consumed alcohol and medication before her death. However, forensic examinations contradicted that claim, finding no alcohol in her system and only minimal traces of common medications. The evidence prompted police to treat the case as a homicide rather than a suicide.

In addition to convictions for rape and murder, the jury also found Thompson guilty on two counts of attempting to obstruct justice by covering up the crimes.

Investigation Revealed History of Abuse

During the investigation, detectives uncovered evidence indicating Kimberley had experienced years of domestic abuse, coercive control, and manipulation throughout the marriage. Family members and close friends reportedly questioned the initial suicide theory from the beginning, describing her as someone who was looking forward to a fresh start after the separation.

Authorities also learned that Kimberley had previously contacted a domestic abuse support service but withdrew her complaint out of fear. Investigators said the case highlighted the long-term impact of abusive relationships and the challenges victims often face when seeking help.

Sentencing Expected Soon

Following the guilty verdict, Michael Thompson now awaits sentencing. The case has drawn significant attention due to the elaborate efforts prosecutors say were made to conceal the crime and the evidence presented regarding prolonged domestic abuse throughout the marriage.
