Rex Heuermann, the man who admitted to multiple killings linked to the Gilgo Beach murders, has spent the last three years in a segregated jail unit in New York. Officials say he largely keeps to himself, reads crime and mystery novels, and briefly communicated with another well-known convicted serial killer while awaiting his sentencing.

Brief Correspondence With Another Convicted Killer

According to Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, Heuermann exchanged letters with Keith Hunter Jesperson, known as the “Happy Face Killer,” who is serving life sentences in Oregon. Jesperson reportedly initiated the contact, and Heuermann responded once before ending the exchange and ignoring additional messages.

Authorities said several other people have attempted to contact Heuermann, but he has rejected most outside communication, including interview requests from media organizations.

Life Inside Isolation

Since his arrest in 2023, Heuermann has been housed in a separate section of the jail under close supervision. He spends much of his time alone and receives only occasional visits from family members, attorneys, and approved individuals.

Sheriff Toulon said Heuermann is not physically active and typically walks around the recreation yard rather than participating in sports or exercise. His daily routine consists mainly of reading books and remaining inside his cell.

Sentencing Nears After Guilty Plea

Heuermann pleaded guilty to the murders of seven women and later admitted responsibility for an eighth killing. Prosecutors are seeking life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Family members of several victims are expected to deliver statements during sentencing. Meanwhile, Heuermann’s own family has chosen not to attend the proceedings, saying they do not want to distract from the victims and their loved ones.
