Five Arrested Near UK Air Base as Police Probe Possible Iran-Linked Terror Plot MZaeAgk59AmDV32QXWJ eW

British counterterrorism officers are investigating whether the arrest of five men near RAF Fairford prevented a possible attack on the U.S.-operated military facility in Gloucestershire. The men were detained after police received reports of three suspicious vans traveling toward the air base, with suspected explosive materials later examined by bomb-disposal specialists. Investigators are considering several possible motives, including a potential connection to Iran, but no definitive link has been established.

Five Men Arrested After Suspicious Vans Reported

The incident began shortly after midnight on Sunday when authorities received a report about three vehicles believed to be heading toward RAF Fairford. Armed officers responded in the nearby Whelford area and arrested five men.

The suspects were initially detained over alleged offenses involving explosives. They were subsequently arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act as counterterrorism officers took control of the investigation.

Police have not publicly disclosed all details surrounding the men or the suspected materials found in the vehicles. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not confirmed that an attack was definitely planned.

Residents Evacuated as Bomb Experts Examine Vans

The discovery prompted a major emergency response around the Gloucestershire air base. Approximately 85 households in nearby Whelford were evacuated while specialists from the British Army examined the three vans.

A bomb-disposal robot was deployed as officers established a large security cordon around the vehicles. Authorities continued assessing whether the suspected explosive materials were capable of causing an explosion.

RAF Fairford is a British-owned facility operated by the U.S. Air Force and has been used by American bombers during military operations in the Middle East. Its role in U.S. operations involving Iran has made the facility a particular focus of security concerns.

Investigators Examine Possible Iran Connection

Counterterrorism investigators are examining several possible explanations for the incident. A potential connection to Iran is among the lines of inquiry, although officials have not concluded that the incident was directed or supported by the Iranian government.

Investigators are also considering other possibilities, including activity involving Russia or non-state militant groups. Authorities have emphasized that the motive remains under investigation.

The arrests come amid heightened tensions between Britain and Iran. RAF Fairford has been used by U.S. military aircraft during the ongoing conflict, while Iranian officials have previously warned that British facilities used for attacks against Iranian targets could be considered legitimate targets.

U.S. President Donald Trump said the suspects had been under observation and claimed they intended to cause significant damage, while British officials have continued to withhold operational details as the investigation proceeds.
