Italian authorities have recovered three valuable paintings by renowned French artists Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse, several months after the artworks were stolen from a private museum near Parma. The recovery brings a major breakthrough in an investigation into the high-profile art theft, though officials have not yet released details about where the paintings were found or whether anyone has been arrested. 

Three Famous Paintings Recovered

The recovered works include Renoir’s “Fish,” Cézanne’s “Still Life with Cherries,” and Matisse’s “Odalisque on the Terrace.” Italian authorities said the Cézanne was valued at about 6 million euros ($7 million), while Renoir’s painting was estimated at 3 million euros ($3.5 million). The Matisse work was valued at approximately 20,000 euros ($23,000). 

The paintings were recovered by Italy’s Carabinieri cultural heritage protection unit during searches carried out under orders from prosecutors. Authorities have kept details of the operation confidential while the investigation remains active.

Paintings Stolen in a Rapid Museum Heist

The artworks disappeared from the Magnani Rocca Foundation, a private museum located roughly 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Parma, during the night of March 22-23.

Police said intruders forced their way through the museum’s entrance and removed the paintings in an operation that reportedly lasted less than three minutes. The thieves then escaped through the museum grounds. An alarm was activated during the incident, preventing the criminals from taking additional works, according to reports at the time.

The museum, established in 1977, houses the collection of art historian Luigi Magnani. Its holdings include works associated with major European artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Francisco Goya and Claude Monet.

Investigation Into the Art Theft Continues

Italian investigators have not disclosed how they located the three stolen masterpieces or identified the individuals believed to be responsible. The Carabinieri said the recovery followed a complex investigation and that the case is still ongoing.

The theft attracted international attention because of the reputation and financial value of the paintings and came amid a series of major art and museum robberies in Europe. Authorities are continuing to investigate whether the crime was carried out by an organized group and whether other individuals were involved.

The recovery of the Renoir, Cézanne and Matisse paintings represents a significant success for Italian art-crime investigators and returns three important works to the country’s cultural heritage.
