Illinois Court Hands Down 120-Year Sentence in Violent 2022 Attack
An Illinois man has been sentenced to 120 years in prison after being convicted of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman during a violent attack that began outside a Starbucks parking lot in Collinsville.
The case stemmed from a November 2022 incident in which the victim was forced into a terrifying ordeal after the attacker entered her vehicle while armed with a knife. The lengthy prison sentence follows his conviction on multiple felony charges, including aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
Victim Abducted at Knifepoint Before Assault
According to court records, the attacker forced the woman to drive to a residential area in nearby Troy, Illinois, where he sexually assaulted her. After the assault, he drove the victim back toward Collinsville, covered her head, instructed her to count to 100, and fled the scene.
Investigators later tracked the victim’s Apple Watch data to help narrow down the crime location. During their search, they recovered a discarded condom containing DNA evidence from both the victim and the suspect. Although the DNA did not initially match any existing law enforcement database, the evidence became crucial in solving the case.
DNA Technology Helped Investigators Identify the Suspect
Authorities eventually identified the suspect using forensic investigative genetic genealogy, an advanced DNA analysis method that compares genetic information with relatives to generate investigative leads. The technology ultimately led detectives to 42-year-old Timothy J. Dubois Jr., who later confessed during questioning.
Prosecutors stated that the suspect admitted the victim was chosen simply because she was alone. During sentencing, the court imposed 80 years for aggravated criminal sexual assault, 30 years for aggravated kidnapping, and an additional 10 years for aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Due to Illinois sentencing laws, he will serve a minimum of 68 years behind bars.
Authorities Welcome the Verdict
Law enforcement officials described the sentence as an important step toward justice for the victim and greater public safety. Prosecutors also praised the determination of investigators and the successful use of forensic genetic genealogy, noting that the combination of advanced technology and persistent police work helped secure the conviction.
The case has drawn attention to the growing role of modern DNA investigation techniques in solving violent crimes that might otherwise remain unsolved.
