Southern Spain Wildfire Claims Lives Amid Extreme Heat
A devastating wildfire sweeping through southern Spain has claimed the lives of at least 12 people, while 23 others remain missing, as firefighters continue battling the fast-moving blaze in Almería province.
The fire broke out near Los Gallardos before rapidly spreading toward nearby Bédar, fueled by soaring temperatures, dry vegetation, and strong winds. Emergency crews have described it as one of the country’s deadliest wildfire disasters in recent years.
Authorities have evacuated residents from several communities while hundreds of emergency personnel, supported by military units and aircraft, work to contain the flames.
Victims Found During Escape Attempts
Officials said many of the victims were discovered inside vehicles or along rural roads after attempting to flee the advancing fire. Emergency services had advised people in affected areas to remain sheltered unless evacuation orders were issued.
The difficult terrain, scattered homes, and rapidly changing fire conditions made rescue efforts especially challenging. Investigators are still working to identify several victims, with reports indicating that many were foreign nationals living in the region.
Cause Under Investigation as Firefighters Continue Battle
Authorities are investigating the cause of the wildfire, with early indications suggesting a damaged power line may have sparked the blaze. However, the exact cause has not yet been officially confirmed.
More than 150 firefighters, supported by soldiers and aerial firefighting resources, remain on the ground trying to prevent further spread. The wildfire has scorched thousands of hectares, forcing additional evacuations and leaving widespread destruction across parts of Almería.
Europe Faces Intensifying Wildfire Season
The disaster comes as southern Europe experiences another intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) in many areas. Fire experts warn that prolonged hot, dry weather is creating ideal conditions for fast-spreading wildfires across Mediterranean countries.
Spanish officials have expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged continued support for rescue, recovery, and firefighting operations as authorities search for those still missing.
