SoftBank Expands AI Partnership With OpenAI Into Cybersecurity

Japanese technology giant SoftBank has introduced a new cybersecurity service powered by OpenAI technology, aiming to strengthen defenses against the growing wave of AI-enabled cyberattacks. The initiative is designed to help key industries and infrastructure operators identify vulnerabilities and quickly address security weaknesses.

SoftBank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son described cyber threats as a serious challenge and stressed the importance of using advanced artificial intelligence to counter increasingly complex attacks. The service will initially focus on approximately 3,000 companies operating essential facilities such as transportation networks, airports and energy systems.

AI-Based ‘Patching as a Service’ Targets Security Weaknesses

The newly launched offering works by examining computer systems for potential vulnerabilities and recommending solutions to close security gaps before attackers can exploit them. The company plans to provide organizations with a detailed assessment and tailored fixes to improve resilience against cyber risks.

Visitors attending the launch event in Tokyo were offered free initial security diagnostics. While financial details of the service were not disclosed, SoftBank indicated that the project marks a major step in expanding AI-driven security solutions across Japan.

Growing Collaboration Between SoftBank and OpenAI

The cybersecurity platform is being introduced through SB OAI Japan, a joint venture established by SoftBank and OpenAI to develop artificial intelligence products for the Japanese market. The partnership reflects the companies’ broader efforts to integrate AI technologies into enterprise services.

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman, who had been expected to attend the launch, appeared through a recorded message, while Chief Research Officer Mark Chen represented the company at the Tokyo event.

As cybercriminals increasingly adopt AI tools to launch more sophisticated attacks, businesses are turning to equally advanced technologies to defend their networks. SoftBank’s latest initiative underscores the growing role artificial intelligence is expected to play in the future of cybersecurity.
