A Michigan woman has been arrested and charged after police say her two special-needs children were discovered alone for several days in a severely unsanitary Flint Township home. Officers who conducted a welfare check described squalid conditions and a lack of basic necessities, leading to felony child abuse and abandonment charges.

Children Found in Squalid Conditions During Welfare Check

Flint Township police were called to a residence in Genesee County on Feb. 18 after a concerned neighbor requested a welfare check at the home. Upon entering, officers encountered a residence littered with trash, overturned furniture and a continuously running faucet, according to officials.

Inside, the two children — both with special needs — were alone without adult supervision or accessible food. Authorities reported that one child was attempting to eat raw, spoiled meat, while the other was found curled up on the floor and covered in waste. The scene prompted immediate concern for the children’s health and safety.

Felony Charges and Police Statement

Investigators determined that the children had been left alone by their mother, 33-year-old Krystal Farmer, for multiple days prior to the welfare check. In response, she was charged on Feb. 20 with child abandonment, child abuse and making false statements to law enforcement during a violent crime probe.

Police said in a statement that the children’s basic needs were neglected and that Farmer “prioritized herself over their safety.” It remains unclear whether she has obtained legal counsel as the case proceeds.

Community Reaction and Next Steps

The disturbing discovery has sparked concern among local residents and child welfare advocates. Officials have not released additional details about the children’s current condition, but authorities typically involve social services in ensuring the safety and care of minors removed from hazardous environments.

As prosecutors build their case, Farmer’s arraignment and any potential trial dates are expected to be determined in upcoming court proceedings.
