Louisiana Priest Faces Child Misconduct Charges

A Catholic priest in Louisiana has been formally charged with multiple felony counts of indecent behavior involving a minor, according to court records in Acadia Parish. Authorities allege the incidents involved a teenager and took place in 2024, sparking renewed concerns about misconduct cases within the Catholic Church.

The priest, identified as 37-year-old Korey LaVergne, is accused of committing inappropriate acts with a 15-year-old with the intent of sexual gratification. Prosecutors say the alleged behavior occurred around January 1, 2024.

LaVergne has denied the accusations and entered a written plea of not guilty in court. A pretrial hearing for the case has been scheduled for June.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Law enforcement officials arrested the priest earlier this year following a complaint regarding alleged misconduct with a juvenile. Investigators say the allegations were brought forward after another clergy member reported concerns about the priest’s interactions with the teenager.

Authorities claim the inappropriate contact may have occurred on multiple occasions over a period of time. The accusations triggered a formal investigation that led to criminal charges being filed in Acadia Parish.

After his arrest, LaVergne was released from custody on a bond of approximately $15,000 while awaiting court proceedings.

Possible Penalties and Wider Church Concerns

If convicted, the priest could face significant legal consequences. Under Louisiana law, each count of indecent behavior with a juvenile can carry prison time and financial penalties. Prosecutors say the charges could lead to a sentence of several years behind bars along with fines.

The case has also reignited broader discussions about accountability and oversight within religious institutions. Louisiana has previously faced major scandals involving clergy abuse, which have prompted ongoing reforms and investigations within church organizations.

Church officials have not yet publicly commented in detail about the case as legal proceedings continue.
