Karmelo Anthony Convicted in High-Profile Texas Murder Case
A Texas jury has convicted 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony of murder in connection with the death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, bringing an end to one of the most closely watched criminal cases in the state.
The case stemmed from a confrontation during a high school track meet in Frisco in April 2025. Prosecutors argued that Anthony intentionally stabbed Metcalf during a dispute, while the defense maintained that he acted in self-defense.
Following deliberations, jurors returned a guilty verdict and later sentenced Anthony to 35 years in prison.
Fatal Altercation During School Event
According to testimony presented during the trial, the incident occurred when tensions escalated inside a team tent during bad weather conditions. Witness accounts and video evidence were central to the prosecution’s case.
Anthony’s legal team argued that he felt threatened during the encounter and sought to justify his actions as self-defense. However, prosecutors described the stabbing as an unjustified act that resulted in the death of the 17-year-old athlete.
Because Anthony was 17 at the time of the incident, he was prosecuted as an adult under Texas law.
Emotional Courtroom Moments Mark Sentencing
The verdict prompted emotional reactions from both families inside the courtroom. Relatives of Austin Metcalf spoke about the pain caused by the loss, while Anthony and members of his family became emotional as the sentence was announced.
The case drew nationwide attention and sparked public debate, with discussions surrounding race, justice, and self-defense claims. Questions were also raised regarding jury composition and the broader social impact of the case.
Anthony will become eligible for parole after serving a portion of his sentence, according to Texas law.
