A major explosion struck a nursing home in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday afternoon, killing two women and injuring at least 20 others, officials confirmed. The blast caused part of the facility to collapse and sent plumes of smoke into the sky, prompting a large emergency response. Investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the explosion, which occurred amid reports of a strong gas odor inside the building.

Blast Rocks Nursing Home During Gas Investigation

The explosion occurred around 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Silver Lake Nursing Home, also known as Bristol Health & Rehab Center in Bucks County, about 25 miles northeast of Philadelphia. Local utility crews had been on site responding to reports of a gas smell when the powerful blast hit, leveling portions of the structure and igniting a fire that complicated rescue efforts.

First responders from multiple counties, including fire and rescue teams, rushed to the scene to aid residents and staff members trapped under debris and within damaged stairwells. Emergency crews worked to evacuate people from the building while heavy machinery was brought in to clear collapsed sections for investigators.

Casualties and Hospitalizations

Authorities confirmed that two women – one resident and one employee – died in the explosion. At least 20 others were injured and transported to area hospitals, with some in serious condition. Officials have said that all employees and residents present at the time have now been accounted for.

Local law enforcement and fire officials praised the rapid response of emergency personnel and volunteers who helped evacuate immobile residents and assist injured victims, even as the structure remained unstable.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact

State and federal agencies, including the National Transportation Safety Board and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, joined local investigators to determine what triggered the catastrophic blast. While a gas leak remains a leading possibility, authorities have not yet confirmed a definitive cause.

The explosion sent shockwaves through the community and drew condolences from government officials, including Pennsylvania’s governor, who urged support for victims and first responders. Nearby residents reported hearing the blast and seeing debris scattered across the scene.
