More than three years after the death of Hong Kong model and socialite Abby Choi, her former husband and two members of his family have gone on trial in connection with her killing. The case, which drew widespread attention after investigators discovered parts of Choi’s remains at a residence in Hong Kong, entered a new phase on September 21, 2026.
Ex-Husband and Former In-Laws Face Murder Charges
Alex Kwong, Choi’s former husband, appeared in court alongside his father, Kwong Kau, and brother, Anthony Kwong. The three men are accused of murdering Choi in February 2023 and are also charged with preventing the lawful burial of a body.
If convicted of murder, the defendants could face life imprisonment. The trial is being conducted before a jury and is expected to continue for approximately 45 days. Prosecutors are expected to formally present their case during the upcoming proceedings.
The defendants appeared in court wearing masks. Kwong Kau wore a white T-shirt, while his two sons were dressed in suits. The proceedings have attracted considerable public attention, with people gathering outside the courtroom and a live broadcast arranged for those unable to enter.
Abby Choi Disappeared in February 2023
Choi, who was 28 when she died, was reported missing on February 21, 2023. She was known for her work in fashion and her presence on social media, where she frequently shared photographs from fashion events and professional shoots.
Authorities discovered parts of her remains several days after her disappearance at a rental property in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district. Investigators also searched other locations, including a landfill, as they worked to locate additional evidence connected to the case.
Police subsequently arrested Choi’s former husband and members of his family. Alex Kwong was later taken into custody at a ferry pier as authorities said he was allegedly attempting to leave Hong Kong by speedboat.
Choi Was Known for Her Fashion and Social Media Presence
Before her death, Abby Choi had established a public profile through modeling, fashion appearances and social media. She attended major international fashion events, including Paris Fashion Week, and had recently shared photographs connected to a Dior show.
Choi had two children with Alex Kwong before their divorce. She later remarried and had two more children with her second husband. Her death shocked Hong Kong, where violent crime is relatively uncommon, and the case attracted significant public interest.
The ongoing jury trial is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding Choi’s death and the allegations against the three defendants. The proceedings are scheduled to continue over several weeks.
