A federal judge has dismissed Alex Murdaugh’s lawsuit seeking $600,000 in legal expenses from former South Carolina court clerk Becky Hill. The ruling concludes that Hill cannot be held financially responsible for the legal costs Murdaugh incurred during his original murder trial, despite allegations of misconduct that later resulted in his convictions being overturned.

Court Finds No Legal Connection to Defense Costs

Murdaugh filed the lawsuit earlier this year, claiming Hill’s actions deprived him of a fair trial in the 2023 murders of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and son, Paul Murdaugh. He argued that because his convictions were overturned due to concerns over Hill’s conduct, she should reimburse approximately $600,000 he spent on legal representation.

However, U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel ruled that Murdaugh failed to establish a direct legal connection between Hill’s alleged misconduct and the legal fees he paid. According to the court, Murdaugh would have needed legal representation regardless of Hill’s involvement because she did not investigate the case or bring criminal charges against him.

Convictions Overturned but Retrial Still Ahead

Earlier this year, the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Murdaugh’s murder convictions after determining that comments made by Hill to jurors compromised his right to a fair trial. The decision cleared the way for a new trial, which is currently scheduled for April next year.

Court filings indicate that Murdaugh withdrew funds from his retirement account to cover the cost of his first defense team and expects additional legal expenses as he prepares for the upcoming retrial.

Murdaugh Remains Behind Bars

Although his murder convictions were vacated, Murdaugh remains incarcerated after pleading guilty to extensive financial crimes involving the theft of roughly $12 million from clients. He is serving lengthy federal and state prison sentences related to those offenses.

Following the dismissal of the lawsuit, Murdaugh’s attorneys filed a notice indicating they plan to appeal the federal judge’s decision.
