A jewelry stand inside a busy shopping mall in Waterbury became the target of a high-impact smash-and-grab burglary Saturday evening. Witnesses say two masked men used a hammer to break open display cases before fleeing with roughly $10,000 worth of items — and authorities are now asking for help from anyone who may have seen something.

Smash-and-Grab at Mall Jewelry Kiosk

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., two individuals dressed in all black entered the kiosk at the Brass Mill Center and smashed the glass displays at the Banter Jewelry stand using a hammer. Once the cases were broken, they grabbed what they could — about $10,000 worth of jewelry — and fled the scene. No one was hurt in the incident.

Mall security video and first responders’ reports confirm the rapid, violent nature of the theft and the suspects’ escape before police arrived. The burglary has prompted concern among retailers and mall-goers, with many now reevaluating security measures.

Investigation Underway — Police Seek Public Help

The Waterbury Police Department — led by Sgt. Joseph Morais — say the case remains open and they are urging anyone with information to step forward. Tips can be submitted to the department’s Detective Bureau at the number provided. Police believe the perpetrators left the mall quickly after the theft and may have had a getaway planned.

Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage, examining possible exit routes, and interviewing mall staff and any witnesses who might have seen the suspicious individuals entering or leaving the Brass Mill Center around the time of the burglary. No arrests have been made yet.
