Xi Jinping and Trump Hold High-Stakes Phone Call Focusing on Trade, Taiwan, and Stability
Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held a comprehensive phone conversation on Wednesday, February 4, covering a wide range of critical issues including trade, Taiwan, and global security. The call, reported by China’s official Xinhua News Agency and confirmed by President Trump on social media, marks the first direct interaction between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies in over two months.
According to the Xinhua report, President Xi expressed his willingness to work with the U.S. side to steer the “giant ship” of bilateral relations through “wind and waves.” The Chinese leader emphasized the importance of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. However, Xi also issued a stern message regarding Taiwan, urging the United States to handle the issue with “extreme caution” and reiterating that it remains the most sensitive topic in China-U.S. relations.
President Trump, writing on his Truth Social platform, described the conversation as “very positive” and characterized his personal relationship with Xi as “extremely good.” The U.S. President highlighted that the discussion touched upon trade negotiations, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the situation in Iran. Reports indicate that during the call, China agreed to increase purchases of U.S. soybeans to 20 million tons, a move intended to bolster the “trade truce” established between the two nations in late 2025.
The conversation comes at a pivotal diplomatic moment, taking place just hours after President Xi held a virtual meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It also sets the stage for future high-level engagement, with President Trump noting plans for a potential state visit to Beijing in April. While both leaders affirmed their commitment to stability, the call highlighted the complex dynamic of continuing economic cooperation balanced against sharp geopolitical disagreements in the Indo-Pacific.
