On the diplomatic front, President Xi emphasized the critical nature of the Taiwan question, describing it as the “most important issue” in China-U.S. relations. The Chinese leader urged the United States to exercise prudence regarding arms sales to the island and to respect China’s territorial integrity. Xi expressed a desire for the two major powers to “make progress step-by-step to build mutual trust” and advance toward a relationship defined by mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
The conversation took place against a backdrop of complex international diplomacy, occurring just hours after President Xi held a virtual meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the call with Trump, both leaders addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine and rising tensions involving Iran.
Looking ahead, the two leaders confirmed plans for President Trump to visit China in April 2026.
