Results From New Jersey 11th District Special Primary Election
Voters in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District cast their ballots on Thursday to select party nominees for the seat vacated by newly inaugurated Governor Mikie Sherrill. The special primary election sets the stage for a critical April 16 general election that will determine who completes the remainder of Sherrill’s term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
On the Republican side, Randolph Mayor Joe Hathaway secured the nomination, running as the consensus candidate for the GOP. Hathaway will face the winner of a highly competitive and crowded Democratic primary field that featured eleven candidates vying to retain the party’s hold on this suburban district.
The Democratic contest emerged as a high-stakes battle between establishment figures and progressive challengers. Leading the pack were Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill, who touted deep ties to local Democratic leadership, and former Congressman Tom Malinowski, who sought a return to Washington after previously representing the neighboring 7th District. Other notable contenders included New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way and former Bernie Sanders political director Analilia Mejia, reflecting the ideological diversity within the party.
Turnout was a major point of discussion throughout the day, with election officials and political observers noting the challenges of engaging voters in an off-cycle February contest. “Special elections typically struggle with voter participation, and holding a primary in the dead of winter tests the limits of civic engagement,” noted one local analyst. Critics of the process have also raised objections regarding the cost of the special election and the condensed timeline, arguing it places undue pressure on municipal clerks and confuses residents who just voted in the November gubernatorial race.
The vacancy was created when Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, resigned from Congress in November 2025 following her decisive victory in the New Jersey gubernatorial election. Sherrill’s ascension to the governorship marked a historic shift in state politics, but it left the 11th District—which covers parts of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties—without representation for several months.
Political dynamics in the district have shifted in recent years. Once a reliable Republican stronghold, the 11th District has trended Democratic, fueled by changing demographics in suburbs that serve as bedroom communities for New York City. However, Republicans view the open seat as a potential pickup opportunity, banking on voter fatigue and economic concerns to swing the pendulum back.
Recent changes to New Jersey’s ballot design also played a background role in this primary. Following legal challenges to the “county line” system, which historically gave significant advantages to candidates endorsed by county party leaders, this race was seen as a test of the new, more egalitarian ballot structure. Proponents of the change argued it allowed for a fairer fight among the large field of Democrats, while some party insiders claimed it made the selection process more chaotic.
As the general election campaign begins, the focus will shift to which candidate can best address local issues such as property taxes, transportation infrastructure, and the high cost of living in northern New Jersey. The winner in April will serve through January 2027 and will likely face another election cycle almost immediately to secure a full term.
