Opera Philadelphia’s Complications in Sue Defies Categorization in Epic World Premiere
Opera Philadelphia has unveiled its latest world premiere, Complications in Sue, a production that aggressively refuses to fit within the traditional boundaries of the art form. Currently running at the Academy of Music, the work chronicles the life of a single character across ten decades, utilizing a radical collaborative structure that prevents the opera from being placed in any stylistic box. The production is headlined by cabaret icon and MacArthur Fellow Justin Vivian Bond, who brings the title character to life through a century of existence.
The creative infrastructure of Complications in Sue is distinct in its scope and complexity. The libretto, written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Michael R. Jackson, serves as the narrative anchor for a score created by ten different composers. Musical luminaries such as Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Nathalie Joachim, and Andy Akiho each contributed music for a specific decade of Sue’s life. Modeled after the surrealist game “exquisite corpse,” the composers worked largely in isolation, unaware of what the others were writing. This approach was designed to ensure that each era of the protagonist’s life had a distinct auditory identity, ranging from orchestral richness to experimental modernism.
The reliance on such a fragmented creative process invites potential criticism regarding narrative and musical cohesion. With ten distinct voices contributing to the score, the production risks feeling disjointed or jarring, potentially alienating listeners who prefer a unified musical language throughout a performance. The shift between genres and styles occurs rapidly, which could disrupt the emotional momentum typically found in single-composer operas. However, proponents of the work argue that this stylistic volatility effectively mirrors the unpredictable and often chaotic nature of a human life, turning the lack of consistency into a thematic strength rather than a structural flaw.
This premiere arrives as a centerpiece of Opera Philadelphia’s 50th anniversary season, under the leadership of General Director and President Anthony Roth Costanzo. The company has built a global reputation for producing boundary-pushing contemporary works, including Breaking the Waves and The Listeners. Complications in Sue aligns with the company’s mission to redefine what opera can be by merging high art with elements of satire, musical theater, and cabaret. By focusing on the “epic” nature of an ordinary life, the production asserts that the most compelling stories are often those that cannot be easily categorized.
