New York Knicks Celebration Ends in Chaos Across NYC
What began as massive celebrations for the New York Knicks’ first NBA title in more than five decades turned violent overnight, leaving several people injured and causing significant property damage across New York City.
Authorities said a 17-year-old was shot in the foot near Times Square during the early hours following the Knicks’ championship-clinching victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Emergency responders faced difficulties reaching the victim because of the huge crowds gathered in the area. Police later recovered a firearm and detained three people in connection with the incident.
Four Stabbed and Dozens Arrested During Unrest
Officials confirmed that four people suffered stab or slash injuries during separate incidents linked to the celebrations. At least ten police officers were also hurt while responding to disturbances.
Law enforcement made 63 arrests on charges including assault, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and illegal weapon possession. Officers reported several confrontations as crowds ignored requests to disperse and some individuals vandalized public and private property.
Buses Burned and Vehicles Damaged Near Times Square
The celebrations also resulted in extensive damage to vehicles. Five school buses being used for transportation during World Cup-related events were set on fire or vandalized. Several police vehicles and private cars were also damaged.
Large crowds filled Midtown Manhattan and areas surrounding Madison Square Garden, with fireworks, street gatherings, and people climbing onto vehicles and structures. Riot police and mounted officers were later deployed to restore order.
Despite the unrest, many fans continued celebrating the historic championship victory, which marked the Knicks’ first NBA title since 1973.
